It is the first state-operated Open University in the entire North-Eastern region and fourteenth amongst the Open Universities in India. The university was introduced with a view to provide opportunities for higher education to a large segment of the society and promote the educational well-being of the people in general.
The university also helps learners from various parts of the state who are unable to continue with their higher studies. The university has initially decided to offer the following programmes, besides some Diploma/Certificate Courses, under the Distance Learning system.
1. Bachelors Preparatory Programme
2. Bachelor of Commerce
3. Bachelor of Business Administration
4. Bachelor of Mass Communication
5. Bachelor of Computer Application
6. Bachelor of Arts
The University has decided to set up its Study Centers in affiliated Degree Colleges, (Junior Colleges and Higher Secondary Schools for Bachelors Preparatory Programme) in every district of Assam.
The university started its academic actions with a Bachelors Preparatory Programme (BPP). The BPP is a six months programme designed specially for those students who failed to complete their 10+2 education.
After completion of this course, one is able to pursue other courses offered by the university. The affordable fee structure is an advantage for poor students.
Interestingly, the university endeavours to provide special education to criminals who are currently in jails.
